Book Review – Blossom In Winter by Melanie Martins.
I thought this was a fantastic dark, romance read… in the beginning. However, I felt it inconsistent and slow. The characters needed more development and so did the story, in my opinion. It’s classed as a romantic thriller so I was waiting for something to happen with maybe her best friend Emma, seeing as she liked to torture a boy or 2, but no. Or maybe there’d be some stand-off between her and Alex (the love interest) for Petra’s affections as it’s later revealed Emma seems to have feelings for her, but no. Instead, apart from at the beginning, Emma’s scenes are fleeting. I don’t even understand why Petra was best friends with her as she was a horrible person!
I couldn’t quite believe the relationship between Petra and Alex Van Dieren or that her dad came around to the idea of Petra dating and ultimately getting engaged to his best friend. The relationship just progressed too quickly!
It surprised me to find out quite late on in the book that Alex was a dom. Although it was hinted at that he had a dark sexual side and had a fetish/kink quite early on in the book, the author didn’t go into any detail until he mentioned about the girls that he had dom/sub relationships with. And this was only mentioned in passing in his narrative, it wasn’t a big revelation.
“If I recall properly, only my former subs used to beg me to f*ck their asses. Wow. I tremble at the thought that Petra might actually want to become one.” Page 388
That is well over half way through the story. There IS a contract drawn up but this is in relation to their relationship and the media (he’s a wall street businessman in his 40s, she’s just turned 18). Hmm I do wonder what a person living the sub/dom lifestyle would think to this book…
He never actually discusses this dom/sub lifestyle with her so he just comes across as controlling. Especially with him giving her rules such as not leaving the table without his permission and having to change into a nightgown when she does so. But also when he forces her to have sex with no warning at all just so he can selfishly get his rocks off! She had absolutely no idea what’s going on and is so confused and upset by it. Later, out of nowhere, Petra’s personality then changes and she goes on to be the dominatrix when she next sees him. I mean, I get her thought process, she wants to beat him at his own game and prove she’s not gonna be walked over BUT this isn’t explained. It’s just as though she’s turned into someone else. She’s also portrayed as naive yet mature but they don’t really go hand in hand and it was shocking to see her go from virgin to wanting to explore everything sexual within weeks of losing her virginity! Now, I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t wanna try anal so soon after having sex for the first time!
In the end I just really struggled with this book. The dialogue was cringey at time’s, especially during the sex scenes when Petra would say, “Ahhh…” instead of the author simply stating that she groaned/moaned. I was expecting more thriller alongside the romance but it left a lot to be desired and a lot of unanswered scenes and questions! Scenes which could have lead the book into a thriller but didn’t really take off. The sub genre is more taboo (age-gap plus he’s her godfather who brought her up like she was his own) than anything else.
this book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review

There’s something about the scent of blood from the undead.
In the heat of battle, hybrid Ava López discovers she has new and fascinating powers, but she does not know how to control them. Though her former enemies have offered her refuge and helped her acclimate to the vampire lifestyle, even they don’t understand her enhanced magic.
With mounting threats from Ava’s former coven and reckless rogue vampires, Ava and her new friends have no choice but to request the wisdom of Holland Taylor to help her understand her powers. Holland is one of the most powerful witches Ava has ever met, and he is also Jeremiah’s ex, which introduces another wrinkle.
Tension between the vampires and Ava’s former coven is building, and when the witches offer a deal Ava would be remiss to reject, she is forced to choose between the life she once considered safe and the life she never wanted.

Book Review – Dark Secret by Danielle Rose.
I fell in love with this book straight away! Witches AND vampires?! What’s not to love if you’re a fan of YA paranormal reads? I love how in-depth Danielle went with the witches and their magic lore and I love the spin that she took with the main character, Ava, after a fight with a vampire didn’t quite go to plan. Ava is tasked with protecting her coven and the village of Darkhaven from the vampires but her coven doesn’t trust her ability to sense the darkness that is coming which she tries to prove otherwise. Throughout the book she goes from strength to strength, but not without her flaws and weaknesses, whilst she struggles to adapt to a life she never wanted. There is a hint of romance running through this book which I really enjoyed and am excited to see where it’ll lead in the second book. Danielle’s writing is incredibly detailed and such a delight to read. I really enjoyed that it was written in first person too. This would be the perfect book if you’re just starting out on your YA paranormal journey.

For christmas my parents bought me a kindle but, as yet, I haven’t used it because I’d rather have it all snug and protected in a case before I do. So here I am trawling through Etsy and Amazon but at a loss as to which to buy! Eek! I have such a varied sense of style that it has me torn over which to choose. There’s soooo many! I have, however, managed to dwindle it down a little as some aren’t made for my kindle type. Kinda gutted about that as it meant I couldn’t have the Buffy Vampyre book one. 😦
Ok so I’ve managed to create a “short” list of cases to choose from:
I love cats! And the cinema lol!
I think this is quite classy!
I like my marvel!
Gotta love Game of Thrones!
I like the steampunkyness!
Roald Dahl is one of my favourite authors. Plus yay books!
Coz I’m a geek and it’s awesome!
Loved this when I was a child so it brings back memories!
Books! Need I say more?
So now do you see what a pickle I’m in? Help! Which should I go for??
Just a quick post!
I converted to Kindle a while ago, not because I wanted to but because its easier for reviewing for the blog. I also have an iPhone and iPad so I kind of just got into the routine of reading on a device. I never found myself missing a real book as I got so used to ebooks. It’s just a lot easier than sitting in front of the mac reading on a screen as most of our review requests come in via email so it makes sense!
Anyways, on Saturday I bought a real book and oh my gosh its sooooo weird. I don’t dislike it yet I don’t like it! I have found out that I read faster on an e-reader, It’s a lot easier to make bookmarks or notes and its a lot easier to read in bed! I have been struggling to read this real book in bed and I can’t get comfortable, my bookmark keeps falling out and it makes my handbag rather heavy! The only down side is I can’t read in the bath as I am terrified I will drop my device in it like I always do with books!
So there it is – I am officially a fully converted e-book reader!!
Which do you prefer?
