Back Porch Poet’s experience of Beauty Con NYC.

Read Back Porch Poet’s honest account about her weekend at Beauty Con NYC. It’s worth the read and is really helpful for those thinking of attending next year. After reading this I personally don’t think I’d go. It seems to have been badly organised and some of the brands conducted themselves really poorly! Have you been this year? What did you think? Sound off in the comments below.

Essano Turmeric Cleanser Review.

Every face wash/cleanser that I have used lately (and by “lately” I mean months!) have all irritated my skin and made it sensitive and sore. While having a gander at the natural skincare in TKMaxx (I swear I don’t live there, honest 😂) I came across this turmeric cleanser by a New Zealand skincare brand called essano which contains turmeric, – I guess that was a given 😂 – aloe vera, which is actually second in the ingredients list 😃, olive oil and jojoba. The product claims to brighten and refresh the skin. I’ve been using it a few days now and I haven’t seen any difference yet in the brightness but I’ve certainly felt more refreshed and my skin has felt so smooth and soft. Finally the soreness that I had previously felt has begun to wear off too! This cleanser also has a lovely scent to it! I think we’re on to a winner here, guys! I really am loving this product and will be a staple part of my skincare routine. Essano are also a cruelty free skincare brand yaaaay! However, this particular product contains beeswax so, sadly, not vegan friendly but some of their other products may be.

Makeup Collab – National Donut Day!

It was national donut day yesterday in the US so my makeup collab girls and I each did a makeup look to celebrate. I chose a jam donut as my inspo. 😀

Foundation: The Body Shop Matte Clay Foundation

Brows: Freedom Makeup Brow Pomade

Eyes: Juvia’s Place Mini Masquerade Palette, K Rose B Cosmetics loose pigment in Poseidon. Revolution Makeup Awesome Dual Eyeliner Line & Flick, E.L.F Volumising & Defining mascara.

Cheeks: New CID Cosmetics I-glow-mini shimmer powder in Ice Pop and Revolution Makeup Vivid Baked Highlighter in Golden Lights (more noticeable on nose)

Lips: Saturated Colour Cosmetics lipstick and vinyl lip gloss in Lady In Red.

I had so much fun. Of course, the red lip represents the jam and the shimmer on the eyes is the sugar.

Greek Goddess Makeup Collaboration.

Hey all. I hope you’re having a fab weekend so far! I wanted to share with you a look I did for a makeup collab I recently took part in with a bunch of lovely women over on Instagram. I had sooo much fun doing this! I chose the Greek Goddess, Nyx, Goddess of the night for my look.

Nyx – Goddess of night.

I’ve used black pressed eyeshadow and blue eyeshadow pigment (both by K Rose B Cosmetics) to portray the night and silver pigment (also K Rose B Cosmetics) to portray the stars. Love these eyeshadows so much and looked like a sparkly vampire afterwards. 😂 Not that I minded haha. The choice of Goddess was also a nod to one of my fave YA book series, House of Night by P.C. and Kristin Cast. If you’re familiar with the series then you’ll know she plays such a major part throughout the series.

Let me know what you think of this look in the comments. There’s so much more that I wanted to but I just wasn’t able to. 😭

On My Wish List: Dermaflash 2.0.

Reading through the articles on Influenster and I came across this little baby when reading about gift sets to buy for Mother’s Day! Omg I needs! I LOVE that it removes peach fuzz as well as exfoliates! Genius! I’ve been thinking about getting rid of my peach fuzz for a while now so that I can have a smoother finish when wearing makeup. Definitely need to invest in one of these!

I got so excited about it that I thought I’d share. Have you used this before? What do you think? Would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below.

Shay and Blue Black Tulip Perfume Sample.

Shay and Blue’s perfume bottles have such a sophisticated look to them!

As soon as I saw Shay and Blue London had an offer on their Black Tulip sample size I jumped at the chance! It had me at “white chocolate”! Oh my god Black Tulip is absolutely divine! Honestly wish I had smell-o-vision right now, guys!

It has notes of plum, white chocolate, black tulip, cyclamen and snowdrops. I can’t stop smelling myself; it’s such a rich, decadent, sweet and beautiful fragrance! If you wear different perfumes in the daytime than you would at night then I’d definitely say this is the perfect scent for a night out. Particularly if it’s for a romantic dinner!

Normally, the sample sizes are £5, and for 2ml, I’d say that’s quite steep but with the promo code: BLACKTULIP the sample was just £1 with free delivery. I couldn’t grumble at that and it turned out to be so worth it! Would definitely recommend you guys stop on by Shay and Blue to try it out for yourself. You can thank me later! 😀

Here’s an example of a couple of the eyeshadows and how pigmented they are (pics taken from the site).

Book Mail: Advance copy of Misfit by Charli Howard.

Absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of “Misfit” by Charli Howard – an international curve model and body activist whose charity, The All Woman Project, goes into schools to teach children about body image and mental health issues.

Here’s the blurb:

So, how did a slightly bonkers misfit with anorexia, bulimia and anxiety decide to solve their problems? I became a model. As you do.

Charli Howard had always wanted to be normal – but for some reason, she couldn’t quite find out how to do it. As a teenager, she felt like the only one who struggled with anxiety and self-esteem issues when everyone around her seemed to fit in. So she tried to embrace standing out: by becoming a model. Believing it would make her happy and envied, she set out single-mindedly to make it – and she achieved her dream. But the reality wasn’t quite as glamorous as she’d hoped. The pressure on Charli to look a certain way took an extreme toll on her body and self-image, and no matter how thin she got, she was never thin enough.

When Charli, though medically underweight, was fired by her modelling agency for being too big, she decided she’d had enough. She used her platform for good and spoke out about the insane standards of the modelling industry, whose images influence young women and girls all over the world. Now, Charli is comfortable in her skin for the first time ever, working happily as a plus sized model in New York. Here, she shares her journey, from anorexic and bulimic teenager to happy, healthy twenty-something.”

I actually feel quite emotional about reading this book to be honest. Maybe it’s because I have a baby girl now and I hope she never ever falls victim to body shaming.

Charli is an inspiration to thousands of girls and I hope that when my little girl Willow is older, she’ll read this book and feel empowered. That she’ll feel comfortable in her own body, be proud of it, and that she’ll become a confident young lady that I know she can be.

“Misfit” will be released 22nd February 2018.

Morphe Brushes 35R eyeshadow look.

Had a little bit of spare time today so thought I’d do an eyeshadow look using my Morphe 35R eyeshadow palette.

It was a birthday gift and was bought from Beauty Bay. It is such a gorgeous palette with beautiful shades of golds, browns and nudes. I love that it has both matte and shimmer shades in it. The pigment in the shades is fantastic and the formula is soft and buttery. There is a little fall out but putting some translucent powder under your eye area before you start your eye makeup will take care of that then once you’re done, you can brush it away and none will be left on your foundation. Would definitely recommend this palette plus at £22, it’s not a bad price either! Especially if you compare it to Urban Decay’s Naked palettes!

I was also bought a Morphe Brushes brush set for Christmas too. I used them today to do this look and they’re amazing! They’re so soft and it’s so easy to apply shadow and blend using these brushes! If you’re looking for a new set, I’d definitely recommend these!

Rose Gold makeup look.

The other day  I thought I’d have a play around with some new makeup that I’d received over the Christmas period. I don’t really get much chance nowadays but thought I’d grab a spare moment whilst Willow had her nap.

All products are cruelty free and some are also vegan which I’ve put in brackets next to the products.

💜 Primer: Illuminate and Glow correcting primer by Pür Cosmetics (vegan)
💜 Foundation: Matte Clay Skin Clarifying foundation by The Body Shop (vegan)

💜 Eyeshadow: Shade and Light Contour Quad eyeshadow palette in Rust Kat Von D (vegan)

Style Eye-Con No. 7 Eyeshadow palette in Starlet using the rose gold metallic shade by Marc Jacobs

💜 Mascara: Beyond Limitations mascara in Jet Black by Saturated Colour

💜 Lipstick: Powerful Color Natural Lipstick in the shade Tender Heart by Pacifica (vegan)

💜 Setting Spray: Glowsetter setting spray by Glamglow

I am absolutely bowled over with the eyeshadow palettes! I am no longer a KVD or MJ virgin! The KVD palette is so buttery and soft and the MJ palette is gorgeously pigmented. What I will say about the style eye-con palette is that there is better colour pay-off when you apply with your finger! It is such a gorgeous metallic rose gold shade that I just know I’ll be reaching for all the time. Can’t wait to try out the other shades in the palette though!

The Pacifica lippy is such a pretty shade and is quite longwearing too! I think it may have converted me back to using lipsticks again rather than liquid lippy! I also love that the brand focuses on natural ingredients! This is another brand I’ve not tried before and as well as the eyeshadow palettes named above, I received it in my Christmas swap box that I spoke of in my blog post here. Check it out to find out what else was inside! I would love to try more of their products and hope they ship to the UK!

Have you used any of the products? What do you think to them? Let me know in the comments below.

****edit****

I would just like to add, that I discovered Glamglow is NOT entirely cruelty-free as they test on animals when required by law (normally this means that they’re trading in mainland China). I actually feel quite disappointed by this  considering how the brand started out. 🙁
