Torchwood Miracle Day Review – Finale! S
Posted by Secret Lives of Fiction Lovers
Hey guys, Sorry i had to stop posting my reviews but i have been seriously busy lately sorting out stuff for school as this is my final year! Help!
Anyway if you are an avid torchwood fan like myself then you will know that the finale of Miracle Day aired in the UK last thursday night – and wasn’t it a fabulous ending..
To quickly sum up what happened in the last 4 weeks of the episodes we have learnt these following key points:
- The Miracle dates back to the beginning of time but was undiscovered
- It is down to Jack meeting a man names Angelo that the Miracle happened
- The Miracle is down to a morphic field that is controlled by 3 families
- there is one person in the CIA who is working for the families
- The miracle is a living thing
- the miracle can be found in Buenos Aires and Shanghai
- Gwen’s dad is going to die – either by the furnaces or by the miracle ending.
So in the FINAL episode the miracle either had to be solved or it would have escalated. We were left at the end of episode 9 with Rex and Esther in Buenos Aires and Jack and Gwen AND Oswald Danes in Shanghai at both ends of the miracle. In the finale they battle their way past security guards (J, G & O) and Rex and Esther get control of the Buenos Aires army as they have a secret weapon – Jack’s blood. Unfortunately another secret family worker is in the buenos aires army and blows up a army truck containing the case of the most important weapon – Jack’s blood. Rex and Esther continue and infiltrate the Buenos Aires miracle complex themselves – as Jack, Gwen and Oswald do. Once they get in and find the miralce they realise that they cannot end it without Jack’s blood being on either side (in Buenos Aires and Shanghai)……..HOWEVER Rex and Esther save the day….
When they arrived in Buenos Aires they knew the blood would be at risk (to stop the miracle the blessing needs to be fed mortal blood from either side to create a morphic field which will make the human race mortal again). In order to protect the blood they transfused it into Rex’s body. So, now they have the blood on each side of the world they can effectively end the miracle, but, the family tries to stop Rex from killing himself by creating a diversion – Shooting Esther in the chest. Now Rex has a terrible decision to make – does he save his very close friend by not ending the miracle – or, does he continue to end the Miracle to stop anything like this from happening again. He looks to Gwen and Jack for help. Gwen, who is determined to stop the miracle for the sake of her father orders Rex to continue for the plan and decides that jack should not be a suicide and offers to shoot him through the back (in the kindest way possible!). So, ready to go, Gwen shoots Jack and Rex uncovers his wound from the beginning of the series and the blood from their whole body gushes towards the blessing. As the Miracle ends the whole of the two complexes either sides of the world begin to crumble and fall..Gwen begins to escape and Oswald is ready to be a suicide bomber in the complex to kill the family member and to avoid a slow death BUT Jack suddenly becomes immortal again and comes back to life! Now Gwen battles Gilly for control of the lift and quickly helps Jack to escape before Oswald detonates. Back in Buenos Aires Rex and Esther – both on the brink of death get rescued by the real and true to the CIA Buenos Aires army who then take them to hospital.
Unfortunatley one of my most loved favourite characters, Esther, dies and Rex, Gwen, Jack and (Emma? – the betraying CIA member) attend her funeral when Rex receives a message saying that (Emma) was the betrayer. In a race to kill her before the family try and recreate the miracle, he tries to shoot her, but she is too quick and shoots him first….
REX IS DEAD
or not, he suddenly comes back to life – so is he immortal??
Meanwhile Gilly meets again with the family member who sent her to Shanghai and offers her to help start with the ”plan b”….and this is where the season finished.
This series has been really tense, exciting, infuriating, heart wrenching but most of all – unpredictable – who knew the blessing was one of the most terrestrial things on the planet? Although, as we have seen from all of your previous comments that you think that teaming with Starz has potentially ruined what we liked about Torchwood – i think it made a great comeback towards the end.
Constructive Criticism – maybe make the series a bit shorter so it flows better?
I think I can safely say on behalf of the majority of you, that i would like the next series of Torchwood to be chiefly set back here in the UK with the old Torchwood hub in Cardiff. Again, as always, Russel has created another epic triumph with these scripts that have been very unpredictable!
looking forward to the next season!
I would like to thank everybody who has been reading my reviews – i would love it if you could comment below what you though of the finale and whether you think that it did the series justice. Also, share this on twitter, facebook tumblr etc as it would really help SLOFL

EPISODE 5
So, we are now half way through the series and i found this episode SHOCKING.
The majority of the episode was set in two overflow camps – the south Wales and California camp. In the camps the patients are catagorized. Category 1 = dead Category 2= injured and concious and Category 3 = normal people. In the overflow camps the category 1 people are sent to a place called ”The Module” which is hidden from the public eye. Torchwood want’s to find out what is in the module. To do this, Rex – who is already recovering from a severe wound from a car crash, pretends to suffer a category 2.
Gwen however, has gone back to Wales to try and get her father out of the South Wales concentration camp as he suffered a heart attack earlier in the series. To get inside the camp to save her father she poses as a night nurse called nurse Pallister.
Back in California Rex is coded as a category 2 by a blue peg, but swaps to red (category 1) so he can get into the module – Esther helps him as she becomes a worker within the overflow camp. Dr Vera has also joined Torchwood and poses as a camp inspector to also try and get access to the Module.
Rex finds the module first and records it as being like a fridge with ceramic walls. He then leaves the module and realises that the size of the module will never be able to meet the demand of the ”dead” bodies. Vera on the other hand isn’t so lucky and finds the way the camp is treating the patients disgusting and threatens the owner of the camp that he will be prosecuted for the bad care of the patients. However she gets shot….twice making her near to unconscious and the owner of the camp dumps her in the module and locks them up…and this is where we find out what the module really is. Rex watches the module helplessly as he sees Vera being burnt alive..in the module aka an oven.
Gwen also realises what the module is when Reece delivers some patients to the burns ward. She is horrified and calls the whole overflow camp a concentration camp (which i totally agree with). Also, whilst trying to save her dad, her father suffers another heart attack and is made a category one..dum dum dum….
Now to what i thought.
I thought this episode really was the best yet! although i found it harrowing and quite shocking when we realise the module was (you will know this if you saw my tweets on saturday!) i thought it was very exciting and at many points left you on the edge of your sofa biting your nails! i also found the scene when Jack told the paramedics that Rex was his ex lover quite funny! GOOD JOB BBC/AMERICA!? IT WAS A GREAT EPISODE AND VERY ENJOYABLE! i have to say though – it looks like everyone is going to ”die” in the next episode
here is a clip from the next episode!
clip belongs to the BBC not SLOFL

EPISODE 3:
This episode was so much of an improvement from episode 2! It was all about what Torchwood is about – living on the edge, fights, sneaking around! it was great!
The main plot of the episode was very much linked form last week when the doctors found out that they would need to manufacture more drugs to cope with the growing population of the world. In the last episode i was questioning who Jilly Kitzinger was and in this episode i am coming to the conclusion that she is clearly linked to the scandal of drug company. Jilly invites Dr Vera to a ”meeting” at her central working place but when Vera asks Rex to tag along things go pear shaped. Dr Vera has actually been taken to a presentation all about the demand for drugs AND instead of Rex turning up Gwen enters the building in order to hack Jilly’s computer. Meanwhile another star of the show who we all hate – Oswald Danes has been making TV broadcasts all over the world to say how he thinks you should not have a prescription to get access to drugs. Oswald has also faced some haters who beat him up at the side of the road and Jack and Rex get a little bit involved (but not with each other!).
I found this episode very gripping and was a triumph compared to last weeks episode. I enjoyed seeing the return of the cyber contact lenses that Gwen had kept and felt at ease when Torchwood started to solve ”Miracle Day” rather than Dr Vera and her panel of doctors. I did think that some of the more sexual scenes may not have been appropriate (Jack and the barman), especially as it was just after the watershed, but i can see what the message of the scene was. I also like how this episode was more beleivable…seeing Esther upset about leaving her home and family to be a part of Torchwood, seeing people annoyed that Oswald was still free – it just all added to the effect. Rex’s character, i know, is someone who many of you don’t like due to his personality of being cockey and quite ignorant. I agree with you all but i think in this episode there was room for Rex to have these traits as it proved that Torchwood can handle situations like this by themselves. I am beginning to really like the character of Esther, i loved the scene between her and Gwen at around 20mins into the episode..very emotional and some outstanding acting on Alexa Havins part.
I was happy to see that the comedy in this episode was toned down in comparison to episode 2. I think the main gags were Esther correcting Gwen with lemonade being flat, ATMs, Cell Phones etc. i really liked that realistic touch that everyone in the UK/US can relate to! My only concerns for the upcoming episodes is that Torchwood: Miracle Day lasts 10 episodes..and i am intrigued to see how far they can make this story line effectively last. Your comments?
